On August
10, 2010 female rapper Nicki Minaj celebrated reaching 1 million
followers on the social network Twitter and just 1 year and 12 days
later she has made history by being the FIRST and ONLY female MC to
obtain over 5 million followers - gaining the last 1 million in just 49
days. The only other female rapper to come close is Queen Latifah who is
being followed by 2,013,197.
Even
more impressive, Nicki Minaj currently has 13,331,921 fans on Facebook.
Nicki Minaj engages very often with her fans, affectionately referred
to as
"Barbz & Kenz", especially compared to rappers having similar
success. While Nicki Minaj has 8,470 tweets, rapper and label mate Drake
has tweeted 537 times and 2,852,553 followers.
Social
networks like Twitter and Facebook provide an unprecedented "access" to
celebrities, which some view as a double edged sword - having both
positive and negative effects that Nicki Minaj expressed concern about
to LowKey (BET) the same day she obtained her Twitter account:
"Let
me tell you something, I was so anti Twitter...today I got a Twitter...
I was forced into it by my whole team and I really didn't like it
because I did feel like it was too
evasive, you know what I mean?"
