Get more details after the jump.

It has now been revealed via Essence magazine that former American Idol contestant will be joining the cast of the Broadway stage play The Color Purple. The Grammy & Oscar winning actress will be playing the role of Shug Avery in the monumental stage play that tells a story that has been viewed many times over many decades in African American homes that stemmed from the movie that starred Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover & Whoopi Golderberg that was released in 1985.

"The stage rendition will be a reworking of the London production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Alice Walker. Directed and designed by John Doyle’s Menier Chocolate Factory, it will feature music and lyrics from legendary singer-songwriter Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. Producers are in talks with British actress Cynthia Erivo to reprise her London role as Miss Celie.
Oprah Winfrey and her theatrical business partner Scott Sanders (After Midnight) will co-produce the revival. The pair also produced the 2005 run."

As most of you can remember Fantasia Barrino also starred in The Color Purple on Broadway back in 2007 when she played the role of Celie. During her time on in the play she made the song "I'm Here" very famous which also opened up her life in a whole new way.
